Sharing health data within healthcare

A care provider who is directly involved in the treatment may accessthe patient’s health data. For example, a doctor and an assistant may be directly involved in the treatment together. A care provider may also share the record with other staff at the practice or institution, if necessary. In both cases, patient consent is not required.

In these cases, the patient’s consent is required:

  • Sharing health data with care providers from another practice or institution. They also take into account their professional secrecy or duty of confidentiality.
  • Sharing health data in an electronic exchange system.

Note: Sometimes there is an exception to professional secrecy. For example, if someone is unconscious and therefore unable to give consent. Or if there is a serious threat to the patient or others.
