How do I protect my privacy against cookies?
Some cookies are necessary to make websites work properly. Other cookies track your online behaviour. Thanks to cookies, companies know a lot about you. For example, what your interests are, how healthy you are, and for which political party you vote. There are various ways to protect your privacy against cookies:
- Make a conscious choice. You must be able to give advance consent for placing cookies that process your personal data. Does a website or an app ask you to accept cookies? Think about which cookies you want to accept then. Do you not give consent? Then you can still use most websites and apps normally.
- Adjust your settings. Many browsers offer an option to adjust the privacy settings. By adjusting these settings, you share fewer data with the websites you visit.
- Use extensions. There are extensions that automatically accept or refuse cookies for you. You can find these extensions in the webshop of your browser.
- Regularly delete cookies from your device. How you do this varies for each browser. Some browsers may even delete cookies automatically. For example, after 1 day, or every time you close the browser.
You can find more information on the page Privacy risks and protecting your privacy with cookies.
Complaint or tip-off about cookies
Do you have a complaint about cookies and how your personal data are processed? Or does a website or an app ask for consent for cookies in an incorrect manner? First contact the owner of the website or app. Do you not get a response? Or are you not satisfied with the response? Then you can submit a tip-off or complaint to the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
